Eva's Story

I am the granddaughter of immigrants who fled North Africa as Jews. And the granddaughter of immigrants who fled Poland during the pogroms. My family also originates from Spain. Jews were expelled by Isabella the catholic during the inquisition. They fled to Italy. Where they were parked in a Jewish ghetto.

I wish this exhibit had one Jewish example of migration. We are the people of exodus.

Sisira's Story

My parents were the first in their respective families to come here in 1999. The majority of our family still lives in India, all the way across the world. We get to see them every couple of years, but they’re always, always calling. We’ve found a sort of second family here because we live in an area where there’s a high concentration of Indian immigrants too and it’s wonderful, but not the same.

Manu's Story

My family is originally from Colombia. I was born there too. I had to leave my country due to 1990s violence era. Especially cause my grandfather was kidnapped. I then moved to Mexico where I was also attempted to be kidnapped. We only lasted 3 years in Mexico. Then California where I grew up, spent 10 years there. However even living in the USA didn’t seem like it. My mom made us talk Spanish in the house, we followed all our cultural traditions & I was totally lost when it came to pop culture. Music was different, the obsession of celebrities, the consumerism. I’ve always felt like I was an immigrant and I still am even if I have my citizenship. I continued my journey to Hawaii and then Miami. Miami now feels like my comfort hole. I get to eat empanadas and hear reggaeton as loud as I want.

A Ph.D in Molecular Biology and work in biotech in Boston. My younger sister is the only one who can legally be president as she was born in the US.
